Margot Reviews Carmela Full of Wishes
The play that I saw was Carmela Full of Wishes at the Chicago Children's Theatre and I went with Dolph Paulsen (my mom's partner). The play is based on a book by Matt de La Peña and adapted for the stage by Alvaro Saar Rios, and directed by Michelle Lopez-Rios.
In the lobby, before the play began, I made a dandelion out of popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners and pom-poms, which was fun. When I walked into the theatre the stage was super colorful and at one end there was a laundry mat and a bodega on the other side. The magnificent set was designed by Regina Garcia and the colorful and sparkly lighting design was by Jason Lynch. The play opens with Carmela (played by Maria Clara Ospina) And it is her seventh birthday! (I had a seventh birthday in July!) Carmela is excited to go on errands with her big brother because she is finally old enough to go, but she finds a dandelion on the way sticking out of the cement. Carmela's bossy big brother Miguel is played by Juan Gonzalez Machain, Carmela's Mami is played by Jasmin Cardenas and her Papi was played by Christopher Alamo. I think the actor who played Carmela is funny and I like the part when she pets the cat. I think the actor who played Miguel was always upset with his sister but I also like when he pet the kitty. There was a really fun part where we all got to be a part of the play by holding up our dandelions. I noticed that when we held up our dandelions there where circle lights everywhere and they also looked like dandelions. The play made me feel happy and cozy inside and out.
My favorite part was when Carmela met this cat (also played by Jasmin Cardenas) that was super cute. The play reminds me of how me and my brother act. I think my friend Libby would like this play because she likes wishes. I would recommend for Libby to see this play. I would give this play an 8/10 because the cat in the play was super duper adorable and it was fun to watch and make dandelions. I would have given it a 9 but I don't like errands.
